Dr. Doodle

The comic conveys the journey of a scientist as she paves a path through her career and details her experiences.

###Dr. Doodle Graduated!
###She’s probably ecstatic – hold on – What are all these other feelings?

###Dr. Doodle stuck in a job search blackhole!!

###Dr. Doodle has landed herself a job! Her days of job search stress are finally over! Don’t you wish that the science you deal with every day could relax you instead of stressing you out?
.
.
###Pictured here: Dr. Doodle’s ultimate happiness with the amino acids(Serine, Proline and Alanine) she deals with on an everyday basis taking away the bureaucratic stress!

###Academia & Industry – Competition or collaboration?
.
.
.
###With all the conferences that are happening around me a sketch idea knocked on my imagination. I wonder – with such different approaches to science can a true collaboration between academia and industry ever truly exist? What do you think?

###Dr. Doodle has been away for sometime now preparing for her new job. She has accepted a postdoc position at an academic lab!!
Ever wondered what the insides of an academic lab look like? 💁🏻‍♀️ let’s find out! We get to follow #drdoodle to her first day at work! 👩🏻‍🔬

###Has Dr. Doodle been working out? 🏋🏻‍♀️
.
.
###Nope! She has been learning how to culture mammalian cells on a plate! These cells can’t be cultured on a bench top due to the fear of contamination. So, Dr. Doodle works in a cell culture hood! The hood prevents contamination of cells by circulating filtered air in a laminar manner 💨
.
.
###To ensure that the sample stays uncontaminated – Dr. Doodle makes sure that her elbows or hands ✋🏼do not touch the floor of the hood – where the air vents are located. It’s painful to start with but does get easier over time! 💪🏽

###The Evolution of a student
.
.
###Dr. Doodle is thinking about her career. What are her goals? What does she want? Grad student > Postdoc > PI seems like a natural progression, yes?
.
.
###I wonder – how many students think of a “next career step“ because they want it and how many do so because of lack of awareness of what else they could do?
.
.
###Are you a post doc or a grad student with an off beat career plan? Do share what you do/ want to do in the comments:)

###An arm with a mind of its own? 🐙
.
.
###Scientists believe that the central brain of the octopus doesn’t have to make all the decisions, instead only decides which arm to move. Their peripheral nervous system has twice the number of neurons compared to their central nervous system. No wonder they are master multitaskers!
.
.
###Dr. Doodle can’t catch her breath! She has so many things on her plate- she wishes she had “octupine” powers! Here she is juggling the many things a scientist and a human being aspires to be!

###“Happiness can be found in the darkest of places – if only one remembers to turn on the light”
-Albus Dumbledore
.
.
###Who knew Dumbledore’s words could be applied in a science lab?! But whoa – in the one minute that Dr. Doodle thought she had made a mistake- she was a huge jumble of self doubt 😳
.
.
###Imposter syndrome is a feeling that you don’t belong, that you’re not good enough, and that you don’t deserve the accolades that come your way. It is especially prevalent among graduate students and early career professors. However it is known to affect even established professors.
.
.
###Considering that “feeling like an outsider” is not so uncommon, perhaps graduate curriculums should include this topic right in with orientation.
